Jewish Sunday Roast

I am fortunate enough to live near a wonderful local greengrocers, and today I stopped in to pick up some fruit and veg for inspiration for Friday Night Dinner.

As usual, there will be quite a crowd around our dinner table tonight, and as vegetarians and vegans, my usual starting point is to lay out on my worktop fruit and veg and build a menu around what is in season.

As I put in my basket cauliflowers and aubergines, I was taken by the beautiful fresh rhubarb on display. It was suddenly obvious that tonight would include a rhubarb crumble.

As usual, the basket filled with more than I intended, but, as usual I was inspired with the menu plan forming in my head.

As the lady at the checkout packed away my goodies, she asked me what I was making with it all. I said I was hosting 14 for dinner tonight and she looked at me with surprise:

She asked, 'Is it a birthday?'

'Oh no,' I answered, 'it's Friday night dinner – we do this every week- basically it's Jewish Sunday roast'

There was a twinkle in her eye, and mine, as we united together on the thought of a delicious rhubarb crumble at some point this weekend.
